How vape coils work?

Vape coils

Tanks, coils, batteries, atomizers, cartridges – vape devices are built from many essential parts that can get confusing at first. However, beginner vapers should know that one of the most vital elements of each vaporizer are vape coils. They take the fundamental part in creating the vapor and allow us to enjoy delicious clouds. How do vape coils work? Let’s find out.

What is a vape coil?

So what is a vape coil? It’s a piece of resistance wire which was composed in the shape of a spring. It can be made from various metals, including stainless steel, nickel-chrome, titanium, and Kanthal. Vape coils are contained inside the atomizer, along with a wick, and together they help to produce the vapor.

How it works?

Of course, the coils need additional elements to work their magic. That is why another essential component found inside the atomizer is a wick. It is made from material, usually cotton, which helps with absorption. In some models, it encircles the coil, and in others, it is inserted through it. Vape juice is drawn to it and then delivered onto the coil, where it can be heated. When the vaper presses a button or inhales, it sends the signal, and the device gets activated. The cotton wick absorbs the vape juice and passes it to the coil. The coil itself is connected to the battery, and when initiated, it heats up along with the e-liquid. Thanks to the high temperature, the vape juice turns into vapor and travels to the device’s mouthpiece, where it can be inhaled by the vaper. Note that the conversion of e-liquid to vapor may take place at different rates depending on the type of coils used.

High and low resistance coils

Of course, in the stores, we will find different types of vape coils – some have high resistance and some low. What is the difference? The first type usually has resistance above 1.0 ohm and requires lower power. As a result, it uses less vape juice and produces smaller clouds of vapor. It is the perfect choice for most types of e-cigarettes. The second type has resistance less than 1.0 ohm and can be used with higher power. It takes more of the e-liquid and creates larger clouds. However, it is not designed for all vaporizers. The best option for low resistance coils is sub-ohm devices.

When to change the coil?

Now that we know how vape coils work, it’s easy to note that thanks to high temperatures, they can burn out. If that happens, coils should be changed. When should you replace it? In most cases, you will be able to taste it! Your e-juice will start to lose its flavor and can taste a little bit burnt. It also may feel much drier. If your vape device allows it, you can look at the coil as well. If it’s nearing the end of its life, it will be covered in dark residue, which is the byproduct of heating the e-liquid.
